our story
Our story began in 1982, in a small family kitchen in the heart of the Bay of Plenty, with Nan’s handwritten recipe book, a well-loved rolling pin, and a simple dream to make something special for our community.
From those humble beginnings, Maketū Pies has grown into one of New Zealand’s most loved pie brands, enjoyed by generations of locals, travellers, and pie lovers across the country.
But while we’ve grown, the things that matter most have stayed the same: quality ingredients, traditional methods, and the aroha that goes into every single pie we make.
For more than 40 years, Maketū Pies has been part of the fabric of our community. Every pie is made right here in Maketū by a dedicated local team who take pride in continuing a tradition built on whānau, hard work, and a passion for making great food.
We are proud to be more than a food business. We are a local employer, a place where people come together, skills are passed on, and opportunities are created for the next generation.
In 2019, Te Arawa Lakes Trust acquired Maketū Pies, helping protect the legacy of this much-loved local brand and keep it connected to the people and place that created it.
In 2024, Montana Group became part of the next chapter when they purchased the business and established a joint venture with Te Arawa Lakes Trust, bringing together shared values and a commitment to the future of this iconic local brand.
Together, we are working to ensure Maketū Pies continues to create opportunities for the Maketū and Te Arawa communities. Through this partnership, profits from a licensing entity will help fund training and qualifications in hospitality and food production, giving rangatahi the opportunity to build skills, gain experience, and pursue careers in the industry.
So, when you enjoy a Maketū Pie, you’re enjoying more than a great Kiwi favourite. You’re supporting the people who make them, the community that shaped them, and a legacy that has been proudly carried forward for more than four decades.
