Iconic Maketū Pies making a comeback
When Maketū Pies faced potential closure after years of tough trading, Montana Group saw an opportunity to not only rescue a business and protect local jobs but also breathe new life into an iconic Kiwi brand.
The fan favourite’s comeback is now well underway, with the goal of reclaiming its place in the hearts, hands and stomachs of New Zealanders.
A brand rooted in Maketū
For more than four decades, Maketū Pies has been woven into the fabric of Aotearoa, its story deeply rooted in the heritage and spirit of the seaside village it’s named after.
However, after struggling through a volatile operating environment for several years, Maketū Foods Ltd was put into voluntary solvent liquidation in November 2024.
In less than two weeks, Maketū Pies was snapped up by Montana Group, one of New Zealand’s largest privately owned catering, event and food service businesses.
The team knew it had a tall order to fill, but armed with a passion for the history, people and recipes, they knew they could revitalise the much-loved brand.
Rebuilding from the foundation up
Since then, Montana Group has focused on rebuilding Maketū Pies from the foundation up. That has meant restoring stable production and renewing quality standards, refining recipes, refreshing the brand and packaging, and investing in the local people whose heart and soul go into every product.
The real asset has always been the people behind Maketū Pies, says General Manager Craig Williams.
“Their pride and passion have driven a heartfelt mission to restore the company, support the community, and reconnect with loyal customers.”
Local people, local community, and a joint venture with Te Arawa
True to its roots, the majority of Maketū Pies’ team members were raised locally and still live in the area.
Given the history of the brand within the region, as well as the previous owners’ link to iwi and community, part of the purchase negotiation included Montana Group and Te Arawa Management Ltd forming a joint venture, which retains ownership of the Maketū Pies brand icons. The joint venture receives royalties, building a fund that supports rangatahi to gain qualifications in hospitality and food production.
“Our connection to Maketū and the wider rohe remains at the heart of every product. Our team has a great sense of pride in our role as the custodians of a true Kiwi icon,” says Mr Williams.
“This journey has been one of highs and lows for our team, but it’s been worth it. We’re seeing customers rediscover the brand with great enthusiasm, and our team’s commitment is as strong as it’s ever been.”
What’s next for Maketū Pies
Mr Williams believes Maketū Pies must remain closely connected to its foundations while building its presence nationwide.
“We are absolutely committed to working with the existing team to reset the operation and refine our offerings to bring back the Maketū Pies that Kiwis know and love. This is just the beginning.”
